Sovereign power coupled with sporty elegance: the Mercedes-Benz Pagoda presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 caused a sensation at the time, and not only among experts. The 230 SL was the world’s first sports car with an innovative safety body. The Mercedes-Benz SL of the W113 series is one of the most popular classics under the stars.
The 280 SL rolled off the production line from 1967 to 1971. When it was introduced, the two-seater roadster impressed with its unique comfort, exceptional driving performance and unprecedented driving safety for a sports car. Visually, the inward-curving, removable coupe roof designed by Paul Braque was reminiscent of the curved roofs of Asian temples – and the “Pagoda” was born. At the time, the Pagoda was considered an absolute showpiece – a sign of personal wealth. The 280 SL was the most popular W113 at the time – with 23,885 vehicles sold.
